DAY 1 to DAY 12
Take a riding tour with GReek Mountains Tours and enjoy the nature, taste local delicacies and smile back at the welcoming locals. At the same time the 11-nights tour will give a sightseeing to rich history of Greece starting from the ancient times until the modern era. Monuments, trails, sites, landmarks, awaits you to be rediscovered while we are going to drive through most of the major Greek mountains and plains
Entering to Greece from Igoumenitsa if you choose the sea voyage or through the Greek-Albanian border at Kakavia. Beautiful Ioannina is our first night and the journey begins! Later in our trip we join those who participate to the sort trip and welcome them at our first night to Kastoria. The tour goes on with final destination beautifull Thessaloniki and Chalkidiki, through more interesting routs.
Meeting at the hotel (Epirus Palace Congress & Spa).
You can arrive at the hotel either from the port of Igoumenitsa if you choose the sea voyage or through the Greek-Albanian border at Kakavia border crossing if you choose to drive. At the hotel the GRMtours team will wait for your arrival and help you with the accommodation. In the evening, we will all meet for a briefing about the group driving style and conditions. Following this, Welcome Dinner at the hotel restaurant will take place.
Meet the Wilderness of Zagori Area
The stone made Stairway of Vradeto village, in use until 1974, the stone made Noutso (Kokkori) Bridge and Plakida Bridge, the breathtaking Beloi Point overseeing to Vikos Gorge and the Vovousa village in the middle of Valia Kalda national forest are some of the places that are in the program of the first day of our tour of northern Greece regions. At the hotel, we will hold the next day briefing before dinner with wine testing night at hotel.
Handling the Stone, Ruling the Water
The mighty Bridge of Plaka, the third biggest of its type in Europe (stone made, single arch), the Kipina Monastery, Kalarites Village with the unique architecture, the Barros Pass, the highest (1904 m / 6246,5 ft) paved pass at Greece road network, the stylish museum of hydrodynamics at Antochori Village and Metsovo are going to be the key moments of our day. Today’s optional activity is rafting at Arachthos River (starting point Bridge of Plaka). At the hotel, we will hold the next day briefing before dining.
Epirus Historic Path
The Dodoni Oracle, devoted to Zeus, second only to Delphi Oracle during the ancient Greek era, Nikopolis, a major port of the ancient Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman eras, the Greek Liberation War (1821-1829) and the Balkan Wars and the familiarization with the craftsmanship of silversmiths and goldsmiths are the highlights of the day’s exploration. Today’s optional activity is flight with balloon if weather permits. At the hotel, the next day briefing before dinner will be held as usual. Good bye Ioannina dinner at Presveia Restaurant below the city walls.
The Roads of the Caravans
Following the old routes of commerce from another era, we are going to have the first transition to another region. The West Macedonia Region and the City of Kastoria through Voio mountain and the Pentalofos Pass. Originally located at a small peninsula of the Lake Orestiada, the city became well-known for the leather and fur industry developed through the centuries. Nowadays, the city has expanded and is looking forward to new challenges. Located at the lake shores, the Limnaion Resort & Spa waits to accommodate our team. We will also welcome those who choose the sort version of the tour. Next day program briefing and dinner at the hotel will give the day’s end.
Getting a Twinkle of a Long-lost Past
The neolithic settlement of Dispilio (~5000 BC), the paleontology and paleobotany museum at Nostimo, the Saint Achilios Church (968 AD) at the Lake Prespa Minor and the “askitaria” of Lake Prespa Major are the points to remember of this day’s cruise. The Varnountas Mountain, wild and remote, oversees the Prespes Plain and gives the necessary swiftness to the day’s drive. Archery contest at the hotel yard will definitely sharpen your eye sight. Briefing for the next day program and diner with winners’ ceremony.
The Naturalist Day
The aesthetic architecture of Nimfeo Village, the “Arctouros” refuge for bears and wolves, the mount Verno (Vitsi) slops, the historic Lechovo Village, the Pisoderio pass between Vitsi and Varnountas mountains and the sense of freedom up to the mountains is what keeps us occupied on day 7. Before the Good bye Kastoria dinner at local restaurand, briefing will hold at hotel.
Crossing the Mountains
The day starts with the farewell wishes to those who choose the sort version of the tour. Mt Vitsi (Verno) and Kaimaktsalan (Voras) are considered among the most delightful and remote of Greece. The Vegoritida lake, the deepest in Greece, awaits to welcome us after the Klidi pass at Mt Vitsi, to relax our senses with the clarity and the serenity of its waters. The cherry farms of the Kaimaktsalan slops will be there for those few lucky enough to cross the mountain during the picking era. Going down on the plains and well before reaching the Lazart Hotel, at Thessaloniki, we will visit the ancient Pella Historic site. Dinner will be held at hotel after the briefing for the next day program.
The Glory of Greece
The ancient Greek Era rose to its highest during the years of Filippos the second and Alexander the third also known as Alexander the Great. The Macedonian Gold collection at Thessaloniki’s Archeological Museum, the capital city of the Macedonian Kingdom, the City of Aeges, the ruins of which are located at the modern City of Vergina, the City of Dion, which was the cultural and spiritual center, will be our major stops. Crossing the Pierria Mountains range opposite to Olympus Mountain will be the task.
Driving through the Plains
The northern Greece may be dominated by mountainous regions but there are two major plains. The Strymonas River Plain and the Axios River Plain interconnected near the Greek-Bulgarian-North Macedonian borders where two magnificent wetlands, Lake Kerkini and Lake Doirani, are located. Upon return at the hotel, we will enjoy a wine testing night with local wines before diner.
The Emerald Green, the Sapphire Blue
A unique landscape, both in the mountains and the seaside, birthplace of the greatest philosopher of the world, Aristotle, with long history and tradition. The remains of king Xerxes Canal, the ruins of Stagira City, the vineyards and the olive tree plantations of the county Chalkidiki would be the last memories of the tour. Farewell dinner at the Glikanisos Restaurant for an alternative cuisine.
The Farewell
All nice things last short but memories are for ever. The morning of the day 12 signals the end of our excurtion. New friends Goodby! Drive safe back at home and stay in contact!
